The Horizon is irrevocably drawing me in. With every new song listen I question what lies ahead, with transcendent thoughts of an explosion in the near distance. Just like the last stop before getting sucked into a black hole, which is where their name comes from, the music of Advent Horizon is so majorly progressive that it’s hard not to wonder what kind of amazing things will come from this Salt Lake City band. With delicate guitar riffs combined with hard and fast drumming, a signature of the band, my mind is completely stretched while listening to the song “Smoke”. So poetic, the lyrics complement every sound aspect of the music completely and vividly. An interesting combination of rhythms and grooves in the compositions lends a unique sound to the band, who cite their influences to include classic bands like Led Zepellin, Yes, and Styx to more modern groups like Tool and Opeth. Musicians Rylee McDonald, Mike Lofgreen, Cason Wood and Benny Shell have been making music since their early teenage years. First inspired by a trip to a Rush concert in his early teens, lead guitar Rylee McDonald has been playing ever since. He says one of his favorite things about being in a band is doing what Rush did for him at an early age, to move and stir up feelings of insight for his listeners. “I love the feeling of putting my heart and soul into a song, then getting to see people enjoy it…” he says of inspiring and putting on shows for his fans. Since their beginnings, the band has gained a massive following in the valley. They are set to release their first full-length album in early December, a huge accomplishment for the group, who are always seeking to be innovative with their style. “As an artist, the goal is always to grow, progress, and learn”, something that the band has proven to do over the years, contributing to their refined style of rock and making a distinct and deep imprint on the music scene in Salt Lake.
